Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma Lotto) raced to his winning formula today when he attacked on the penultimate climb of 191.2km Stage 3 of the Eneco Tour in Belgium.
Even though the peloton knew to expect his move, they could not respond and Gilbert was able to ride the final 7km solo to the finish line.
With Taylor Phinney (BMC) dropping from the front group and finishing 35sec back, the Belgium also took over the American's lead on the General Classification.
Earlier in the race, BMC, with a fair bit of help from Greg Henderson (Team Sky), worked hard to reel in the break of four riders. Henderson is in great form at the moment and enjoying this block of racing.
With 18km to go the field was back together and the final attacks began. Unfortunately for Jesse Sergent (RadioShack), who was in a good position, he flatted with 12km left to race and could not rejoin the peloton.
Sam Bewley (RadioShack) was also racing well over the hilly terrain. He finished just 1min behind the leaders while around 70 others finished more than 10min later.
Tomorrow's stage is a 14.7km time trial, another chance for the Kiwis to shine.
