Defending champion skips Taupo

PeterLathamTos1ThumbNov 24th, 09. Last year's Avanti Classic winner Peter Latham has decided not to defend his title this Saturday, opting instead to enjoy some time off the bike after a hectic season.

"I would love to be lining up but I need to hang the bike up for a couple of weeks and spend some time with my family," Latham told RoadCycling.co.nz this afternoon.

Latham has just returned from Melbourne where he was part of the very successful New Zealand track team who came home with four golds, a silver, and a bronze from the recent UCI World Track Cup.

Before Melbourne the Te Awamutu rider was in Invercargill for the Oceania Track Champs and the PowerNet Tour of Southland where he finished 5th overall racing with his US pro team Bissell Pro Cycling.

"I've got nearly 90 days of racing under my belt after leaving home this year on the 4th January for the snow of Beijing then the cold and wet of California," he said.

Latham, the recently crowned New Zealand criterium champion, said he is hoping he'll get to enjoy a much longer summer this season.

Although Latham won't be riding, two previous Classic winners will be there at the start line;  Jeremy Yates and Gordon McCauley.  Both riders have just returned home after back to back tours, firstly in Southland and then in China.

On Saturday morning, McCauley and Yates will be joined by field of at least 70 elite riders who will compete in the Avanti Classic 160km race.

The elite riders start at 6:45am and are expected to finish from 10am.
