The peloton appeared to have left it a little late to chase with Phil Liggett predicted they woudn't get caught. Liggett said they deserved to win after keeping up a 43km/h speed average for the entire race with only four riders. After catching the break and winning the final sprint over the line Mark Cavendish said that "it as touch and go whether we would get the break in. It was a really fast out there, the speed was super high". This isn't the first time Chadwick has been out in front in the Tour of California, in 2006 he won the overall "Most Aggressive Rider" title. In 2008 Chadwick represented New Zealand in the Beijing Olympics Road Race and won the overall winner of the Tour of Arkansas and the Vuelta Tour of Mexico as well as King of the Mountain jerseys at Tour de Beauce and Tour of Utah. These successes came after coming back from hospitalisation over the life threatening Epstein-barr virus. This is the same virus that affected Michael Rogers recently.

Tomorrow is the 24km individual Time Trail which may also suit Chadwick who won the inaugural New Zealand Elite National Time Trial Championship in 2007.
