Be part of the iconic Tour of Southland
Jun 22nd, 12. The road cycling community turns its eyes to the bottom of the country for a week in November for the iconic Tour of Southland.
RoadCycling.co.nz shares how you can be a part of the fun.
Top New Zealand cyclists make an annual pilgrimage to Southland to learn what it is really like to face the Tour of Southland and to call themselves a true Kiwi cyclist.
The tour is a seven day, 900km jaunt around the best the region has to offer - and the cruel Southern weather makes the race even tougher.
18 year old Josh Atkins and his young PowerNet team outshone their rivals to win the 2011 edition.
Who will take the 2012 spoils?
Race the tour - are you up for it?
Entries will be open shortly - now is the time to get your team organised.
With space for only twenty teams of six riders, it is important for riders to express interest now to avoid missing out.
If you are not part of a team, you are still able to enter the event as as an individual rider. Race management will place you in a composite team.
Tour Manager Bruce Ross warns that it is a tough tour, definitely not for beginners. He told Roadcycing.co.nz that riders should be racing scratch in their local races as a pre-requisite for the skill required for this tour.
The 2012 edition promises to be as competitive as the other 56 editions, with Ross already receiving expressions of interest from riders and teams from Australia, America, Belgium and the Philippines.
How else can you be involved?
The Tour of Southland is made possible through hundreds of volunteer hours. Lead by the team at Cycling Southland, the tour utilises the skills of passionate people to ensure the it is a success.
If you are keen to be a part of the tour and are available from October 28th until November 3rd then there is a job for you!
Whether as a driver, with a team or as a timekeeper, passionate people are always welcomed to contribute to the event.
If you are interested, please contact Bruce Ross (Bruce.email@example.com).
No changes to the course
After making changes to the course for the 2011 event, the organisers do not have any new course changes planned for this year.
They do, however, hope the riders will get to complete the full course. Last year the pivotal penultimate stage, an individual time trial in Winton, was cancelled due to snow last year.
The 2012 edition includes a team time trial prologue, the defining Bluff Hill summit finish and the long 180km stage from Te Anau to the top of the Crown Range.
The 2012 Tour of Southland runs from October 28th to November 3rd.
