Today's twitter announcement means two new pro tour teams are hoping to make their debut down under, the other being British Cycling's Team Sky.

Although rumours have been rife, neither team have announced their rider roster as the UCI rules don't allow the teams or riders to discuss transfers before 1 September.

The UCI also governs pro tour licenses and both RadioShack and Team Sky have applied for a 2010 license.   The status of these applications won't be known until next month when the UCI announce which teams have been successful in renewing their license, or gaining one for the first time.

If all applications are successful, the number of pro tour teams would increase from the current 18 to 21.

Last year's Tour Down Under attracted record numbers of spectators and media after Armstrong announced he would be at the event as his first comeback race after returning from his three year retirement.

With the excitement of Armstrong's return and the prospect of two new pro tour teams, the 2010 Tour Down Under will also be a huge event.

In addition to the great racing, this year's event also includes Ausbike, a four day consumer based cycling expo.   If it is anything like Ausbike the tradeshow, it will be cyclist heaven.

Kiwis racing down under

Last year three kiwi pro cyclists were racing in Adelaide; Greg Henderson, Tim Gudsell and Julian Dean.  Although we don't know who will be back this year, you could be there joining them.

The Mutual Community Challenge Tour gives everyone the chance to ride Stage 4 just hours ahead of the pro cyclists.  With distance options of 35km, 111km and 160km - there is something for everyone.

Included in the fee for this event is a Mutual Challenge cycle jersey which is compulsory to wear.  Our advice - check the sizes before you order.  Last year the fit was incredibly small and there wasn't an opportunity to change sizes once ordered.

If you are going with a group, your team name is included on the back of your jersey. If you haven't got a group big enough, join the RoadCycling.co.nz team. Email us for details This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Another tip, look into accommodation options quickly. When RoadCycling.co.nz tried to book last month our first choices for accommodation were already booked up.

The Tour Down Under begins on January 17th with the Down Under Classic, a criterium around the streets of Adelaide, then the six stage tour starts two days later.
