Chamois Cream

Chamois Cream. Whats that you ask? Its something I only found out about recently. Since starting cycling only a small number of years ago there have been a few lessons I have learnt along the way.

Chamois Cream is one of them. Is funny how this wasnt a topic that any of my new cycling friends discussed. I did hear people complaining about saddle sores. But not once did I hear any solutions.

After watching Tyler Hamilton and friends on their 2003 Tour De France movie you would have thought it would click into place. On that film one of the support crew lathered up each of the cyclist shorts each night with a bucket load of white creamy stuff.

A while back I was in Australia and picked up some Assos Chamois Cream. This seemed just like the stuff that they were using on the film.

This seemed like the real stuff. On my cycling rides I started to coat the inside of my thighs, and under the boys region with this stuff. Its probably fair to say that I was pretty happy with the result. It seemed to soften the chamois, make the whole behind/seat region a bit more slippery which all resulting in happier riding. After running out of the Assos cream I started riding without it and to be honest never really noticed much difference. I think my behind had become a bit accustomed to the experience of riding.

Two weeks ago my wife mentioned that her local Swim shop had a new product for lubricating the neck of your swimming wetsuit to stop the rashes that were so horrible on sea swimmers and Ironmen. She purchased a few tubes of this stuff and brought it home. It was called Body Glide.

After a quick bit of research on Body Glide .com it became pretty apparent that this stuff was also designed for cyclists. So being one to try out new and wacky products that may have some performance benefit, I thought I would try the bodyglide as chamoix cream.

Bodyglide isnt a cream but more of a stick of lubricant that you rub over the area you are wanting to lubricate. After a few rides with this stuff I am converted. Not only does the product provide awesome lubrication its very water and sweat proof and seems to stick onto the right place over very long rides. This definitely provides for premium comfort.

Bodyglide also make the same product with a built in sunscreen, which I am sure would be great for wetsuit necks, and the likes as well.

Body Glide Sun

This is such a great product I will see if I can get some on hand and put up for sale on this site. In the meantime if you cant find any online, drop me a note and I will put you in touch with the local Swimshop that is selling it. This is SwimShop opposite Fryburg Pool in Wellington New Zealand.

I wont bore you with all the technical details, but read about them here . Needless to say I now don't venture out without a quick rub of Bodyglide in all the places where the sun doesn't shine. What I am wondering now though, what other things about riding a road riding do I still not know about that will make 5 hour tempo rides more comfortable. I will try to let you know when I find out more. :-)
