Turmeric Enhances Peak Performance

thumb_TurmericHaving an Indian curry for dinner tonight? Add turmeric! Research is providing evidence for the many health benefits this common Indian spice contains. By Kimberly Taylor, nutrionalist.

Turmeric

The secret to achieving high-level conditioning is effective recovery and this is exactly where turmeric excels, reducing recovery time and increasing peak performance and endurance.

Poor recovery after exercise includes extensive muscle and joint pain, lethargy, sleep disturbances, high risk of injury and possible nausea and exhaustion. It typically lasts for 2-3 days and reduces athletes’ ability for peak performance and obtaining a high-level condition.

Studies have shown turmeric enhances muscle repair after exertion leading to faster restoration of the muscle tissue. This is due to the curcumin, the active constituent in turmeric, acting directly on new muscle cells to increase growth and fusion. The affects of curcumin on muscle tissue were rapid with noticeable stimulation of muscle cell regeneration after just a few days.

When turmeric is used before physical activity, the resulting inflammation, pain and muscle damage from exercise is significantly reduced and enhanced further exercise performance the studies showed. These findings support the evidence from other studies which showed potent anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric reducing inflammation from muscles, joints and other damaged tissue.

In clinical experience, the use of turmeric in a treatment plan for peak performance, endurance and optimum recovery post-exercise has worked successfully in India for years.

In my clinic, I find turmeric an indispensable herb for providing my athletic clients with the combination of strong anti-inflammatory action and muscle tissue regeneration making it a top choice for fast recovery. It is particularly important for clients who compete in multi-day events and need effective and fast recovery overnight.

Modern research is now providing evidence for what Ayurvedic medicine has known all along.
