Matthew Goss surges to No1 in the world

TDWGossMSRTrophy_ThumbMar 22nd, 11. After his stunning performance in Milan San Remo, Matthew Goss tops the latest UCI World Tour rankings with a solid lead over Michele Scarponi and Cadel Evans.

Goss is the only rider to have gained points in three events this season, that's three out of three for the 24 year old Australian.

He debuted as the No. 2 ranked rider after the first event of the season, the Tour Down Under, then gained points in Paris Nice and after the weekend's Milan San Remo win, he took the top position.

Former leader Tony Martin drops to 4th behind Goss, Scarponi (6th in Milan San Remo, and 3rd overall at Tirreno Adriatico) and Evans (1st overall at Tirreno Adriatico).

In the team's ranking, HTC Highroad continue to lead while the team's under them shuffled around. Rabobank moved from 4th to 2nd, while BMC debuted in 2nd place thanks to Evans.

Australia still dominate the top of the nation's ranking, as Italy surged from 11th to 2nd with Germany remaining in the Top 3.

While Goss has a solid advantage at the moment, he could be challenged by the results of two World Tour events before next week's ranking update. Evans is currently racing the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya stage race, while Goss has another chance to earn more points on Sunday's Gent Wevelgem - he placed 3rd there in 2009.
