In our second of the Kiwi moments that made 2016 we look at the unsung Kiwi who outshone the rest. Georgia Williams raced the UCI World Road Championships but not for New Zealand. Veiled by the other riders in matching uniforms around her she posted the best result by a Kiwi in Doha; but many will not remember.
We have to confess that we nearly missed her! When the announcement was made for the team to race the UCI World Road Championships in Doha, the name Georgia Williams was not on it. Indeed, there was not one name in the elite women’s category, only Mikayla Harvey and Madeleine Park who were racing the junior category.
But Georgia, after a season devoted to the Rio Olympic campaign, was at the Doha World Championships; riding for her BePink team for the first time in the whole of the 2016 season. The team, who’d had just two training rides prior to the race, placed a highly creditable fourth; just missing out on the podium.
The win might have gone to Boels-Dolmans, with Canyon SRAM and Cervelo-Bigla Pro Cycling taking the silver and bronze medals; but Georgia Williams will forever go down in history as the highest placed Kiwi at the UCI World Road Championships, and many of us will not remember!
